Argentina Duck Hunting
Duck Hunting in Uruguay

Even though now we hunt almost exclusively in South America, we still have the same passion for waterfowl hunting in North America that we have always had. Argentina duck hunting offers more excitement than any North American duck hunting trip, but in my opinion, hunting wood ducks (and attempting to use my duck call) in the USA is about as fun as duck hunting gets—well, maybe not more than duck hunting in Uruguay, but here we go.

Uruguay Dove Hunting
Duck Call

I can say that after a full season of Uruguay dove hunting, my shooting is well tuned for my next wood duck hunt…I have to admit, I am no expert at calling wood ducks with my duck call. Who really is for that matter? Furthermore, I have never had a lot of luck having woodies come waffling into my duck decoys (my wood duck decoys that I spent a lot of money on). Unlike Argentina duck hunting, where we hunt baited fields, such activity is strictly prohibited in our neck of the woods. But I will say, that some great wood duck hunting can be had in northeastern Tennessee, especially in the middle of September. It’s not duck hunting in Uruguay, but it is a great time to bushwhack wood ducks in these parts, a duck hunting trip that I look forward to almost as much as hunting in South America—Ok, I said “almost”.

What Kind Of Terrain Is Best Suited For Duck Shooting in Tennessee?

We have numerous bends on the Holston River that meander in all directions, stretching three to four miles each before reversing direction. With duck boat, duck gun, duck call, and duck hunting dog safely stowed in my watercraft, we set out. There are boat ramps about every three miles, so it is easy to do a float trip, and really sneak up on wood ducks, and a few lost mallards and widgeon.

One can float all day, or for just a few hours, and the results are always the same—you can limit in 30 minutes, or not shoot a single bird all day, or even blow one cadence on your duck call (something that never happens on an Argentina duck hunting trip), although that seldom ever happens—but when it does, you are really ready to pack it all up, especially after you look at all of the money that you spend hunting ducks in North America, and realize that for the same price (gas, truck, boat, Hevi-Shot, licenses, motels, etc.) that you could be on a Uruguay dove hunting trip shooting thousands of rounds per day—but I digress—I suppose because this is a website about bird hunting in South America.

But today was a good day…I jumped three to four wood ducks every mile, and limited quickly (I only shoot drakes). On average, I would sneak up on groups of 2 to 4 birds per encounter. Luckily, I tend to find larger groups of teal, in the even the wood duck hunting is slow, and then I will down three or four birds on each encounter. If you are interested in trying this yourself, although I would prefer you choose Argentina duck hunting instead, you need to go with one of the local duck hunting guides, since knowledge of the river is essential.

The main channel of the Holston River is three to five hundred feet wide, and has numerous log jams and thick sandbars—a duck hunting paradise for wood ducks! Chances are you won’t ever do any duck shooting on the Holston, but instead wisely choose on Uruguay dove hunting…but in the event you ever visit northeastern Tennessee it is something worth doing—bring your wood duck call, and come on!
